Post-treatment
Many patients ask themselves whether they will always have straight teeth and a beautiful smile once their braces are removed?
Will I stop the effect of orthodontic treatment forever?
Throughout our lives or in recent years (acquired defects), our teeth were positioned in a particular place, but due to the forces created by our braces, they have been moved to new locations.
What can I do to keep my teeth in their new place?
In order to maintain the effects of the treatment, we need to continue orthodontic treatment for many more years, what we call retention treatment, which prevents or reduces as much as possible the occurrence of so-called recidivism, i.e. recurrence of the defect.
- In most adult patients, retention treatment is lifelong.
- Retention treatment consists of bonding so-called fixed retainers in the form of thin arches to the inside of the teeth and the use of a removable retainer at night in the maxillary or maxillary and mandibular areas.
- In adolescents, the duration of retention treatment is shorter, lasting several years. Retention treatment is carried out with retention appliances, which we divide into:
- Fixed retention braces - are fixed to the dental arch for a period of several years even for life (in adult patients),
- Removable retention braces - are usually worn by patients overnight.
Follow-up visits for retention treatment take place every 6 months.
