What is microplastic in dental composites?
Microplastics are very fine plastic particles that can be present in traditional dental materials - especially those based on epoxy resins such as bis-GMA (Bisphenol-A-glycidyl–methacrylate). Although fillings made from these materials have been regarded as the standard for years, a growing body of research suggests that their composition may release trace amounts of endocrine disrupting compounds.
Modern composites without bis-GMA - a healthier alternative
In our clinic we use biocompatible bis-GMA and BPA-free composites, which have been developed for patients seeking maximum safety. These are new-generation materials, free of classical resin-based Bisphenoland therefore do not release plastic microparticles. Their composition is based on alternative monomers (e.g. ormocerach or resins urethane-dimethacrylate), which exhibit high chemical stability, abrasion resistance and lack of toxicity.
