There are no age contraindications and virtually any adult who has successfully undergone a medical consultation can undergo dental implants. W UNIDENT UNION® The oldest patient who decided to have implants placed under dentures stabilised on them was 82 years old. He underwent the procedure without the slightest complication and was enjoying a comfortable smile six months after the procedure.

Obviously, the implant procedure must be preceded by a thorough medical history in order to establish the existence of any contraindications to implant treatment due to the general state of health.

We can distinguish between absolute contraindications, which exclude the possibility of implantation, and relative contraindications, which we can eliminate with appropriate therapy.

Absolute contraindications: 

  • severe mental illness, 
  • active cancer, 
  • radiotherapy, 
  • chemotherapy, 
  • haematological disorders, 
  • systemic diseases, 
  • osteoporosis, 
  • alcoholism, 
  • diabetes that cannot be stabilised, 
  • total lack of hygiene habits, with no prospect of improvement. 

 

Relative contraindications: 

  • underage - youngsters under 16 cannot undergo implantation as their bones are not yet fully developed, 
  • Jaw bone atrophy - prior bone reconstruction required (Implants for bone atrophy), 
  • cardiovascular diseases, 
  • rheumatic disease, 
  • kidney disease, 
  • liver disease, 
  • endocrine disorders, 
  • pregnancy, 
  • stabilisable diabetes, 
  • poor oral hygiene, 
  • gum and periodontal diseases - periodontal treatments 
  • bite disorders - orthodontic treatment Orthodontics 
  • nicotinism - reducing or stopping smoking.

This group includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Smokers,
  2. People with periodontal disease,
  3. Patients with inferior bone quality,
  4. People with stabilised diabetes.
