Types of all-ceramic porcelain crowns

Types of porcelain crowns - which solution to choose?

Porcelain crowns are one of the most commonly used solutions in modern aesthetic prosthetics. They make it possible to rebuild damaged or lost teeth, restore the correct bite and achieve a natural-looking smile.
At the clinic Unident Union® in Wrocław we perform exclusively all-ceramic crowns, i.e. metal-free - the most aesthetically pleasing and best tolerated by the body.

In this article, you will learn about the most important types of porcelain crowns, the differences between them and the indications for their use.

What are porcelain crowns?

A porcelain crown is a fixed prosthetic restoration that completely covers a tooth or is set on an implant. Its function is to:

  • Tooth structure reinforcement,
  • restoration of masticatory function,
  • restoring aesthetics,
  • protection of the tooth after root canal treatment,
  • restoration of a tooth in the absence of a natural root (implant).

Types of porcelain crowns - a breakdown by attachment method

1. crowns on own teeth

  • Based on the natural root and crown of the tooth.
  • They require the tooth to be ground to the correct shape.
  • Excellent solution for extensive tissue damage, fractures or after treatment endodontic.
  • They also allow the shape and colour of anterior teeth to be corrected.

2. implant-supported crowns (implantoprosthetics)

  • Attached to a special prosthetic abutment after the implant has been placed.
  • They allow the restoration of single teeth, bridges or entire arches.
  • They perfectly imitate natural dentition - both in shape and colour.

3. combination crowns (natural teeth + implants)

  • Some crowns based on the patient's own teeth, some on implants.
  • A popular solution for the restoration of larger gaps or bite reconstruction.
  • They allow for a harmonious, uniform aesthetic and functional effect.

Types of porcelain crowns - breakdown by material

1. feldspathic porcelain crowns (layered)
- Hand-modelled by a technician in layers of ceramic feldspathic.
- They provide exceptional aesthetics - translucency, photosensitivity, natural detail.
- They require a lot of experience and precision, but the visual effect is unparalleled.

For whom?
For patients with high aesthetic requirements - especially in the anterior segment.

2. porcelain crowns lithium-silicate (E.max)
- Stamped or milled crowns in durable glass ceramic.
- They allow minimal preparation of the tooth.
- Very aesthetically pleasing, thin, durable - a compromise between beauty and functionality.

For whom?
For most patients - in both the aesthetic and lateral zones.

3. zirconia crowns (all-ceramic on zirconium oxide)
- Very durable, ideal for reconstruction of lateral teeth and bridges.
- Less translucent than feldspathic porcelain, but very durable and resistant.
- They can be manually characterised for a better aesthetic effect.

For whom?
For patients with high chewing pressure, parafunctions (e.g. grinding), full arch reconstructions.
