Closed curettage
Scaling & Root Planing (Closed Curettage) - a key step in periodontal treatment
After thorough removal of supragingival and subgingival calculus and professional hygienization, we perform closed curettage (Scaling & Root Planing, SRP) in the second stage of periodontal disease treatment. This is an advanced method of cleansing the roots of the teeth of deeply embedded bacterial deposits and toxins that can still cause inflammation in the periodontium.
How is a closed curettage performed?
Precise cleaning of gingival pockets
- The procedure is carried out using specialised Gracey curettes, which enable the gentle and effective removal of infected tissue and bacteria deposited on the root surface.
- Curettes must be perfectly sharp, which is why at Unident Union® are sharpened regularly, allowing for maximum effectiveness without unnecessary irritation of the gums.
Smoothing the root surface - root planning
- Once the bacteria have been removed, the root is smoothed to prevent further plaque build-up.
- This process eliminates bacterial toxins and facilitates the re-attachment of the gingiva to the tooth, which reduces the depth of gingival pockets.
Evaluation of the effects of treatment - periodontal probe examination
- A few weeks after the procedure, we assess the periodontal condition by measuring the depth of the periodontal pockets.
- If the inflammation recedes and the pockets shallow, the patient goes on to regular monitoring.
- If deep pockets, bleeding and inflammatory exudate are still observed, we move on to a more advanced method - open curettage.
Why do we always start with a closed curettage?
- It is a minimally invasive, comfortable method that in many cases is sufficient to stop periodontal disease.
- It does not require incision of the gums, which reduces recovery time.
- With proper hygiene and regular monitoring, it can allow for complete periodontal stabilisation without the need for surgical intervention.
Closed curettage is an essential part of periodontal treatment, allowing the inflammatory process to be inhibited and the periodontal tissues to regenerate. At Unident Union® We ensure that we always use the least invasive, yet most effective methods, ensuring patients' health and the long-term stability of their smile.
