Gum treatment
PERIODONTAL DISEASE IS THE SECOND CAUSE OF TOOTH LOSS AFTER DENTAL CARIES
Maintaining good dental health for many years depends not only on the health of the teeth, but also on the condition of the gums, which form their base and support.
Periodontium, is a broader term than the commonly used term gums. The periodontium consists of various tissues that are in contact with the root of the tooth, apart from the gums, these include the periodontium, the periosteum, the alveolar bone and the so-called root cementum. A healthy periodontium is a prerequisite for the proper retention of teeth in the alveoli.
What are periodontal diseases?
The term encompasses all chronic pathological processes in the periodontal region, above all inflammations, among which we distinguish: gingivitis, which is the superficial form, and periodontitis, which affects deeper tissues, called periodontopathy by specialists and commonly referred to as periodontitis.
The main cause of gum problems is plaque, consisting mainly of bacteria that settle and grow on the surface of the teeth. The bacteria produce acids that attack the enamel and toxic substances (toxins) that irritate the gums, causing local inflammation.
The primary symptoms are swollen, red and bleeding gums, especially during tooth brushing. Untreated irritation of the gums leads to receding gums. The connective tissue between the tooth and the gum is destroyed and a depression - a gum pocket - appears. The consequence of a lack of appropriate treatment is the gradual development of inflammation leading to parodontosis.
Predisposing factors for the development of the disease?
Undeniably, inadequate hygiene is the main reason for the emergence of periodontal disease, but many years of observation have shown its association with the presence of other factors.
These includesystemic factorssuch as:
- Avitaminosis, calcium deficiency,
- endocrine disruption,
- diabetes,
- rheumatoid arthritis,
- impaired salivary secretion,
- bruxism, or habitual teeth grinding.
andlifestyle factors:
- excessive alcohol consumption,
- smoking.
Studies show that various forms of gingivitis affect about 90% of the Polish population, with a predominance of men, while periodontitis, affects about 10% of Poles. Periodontal disease affects children and adolescents to a very small extent, increasing its statistical frequency in people over 35 years of age.
Treatment of periodontal disease
Initial treatment focuses on removing the underlying cause of the disease-infection caused by plaque build-up on the teeth and gums, i.e. introducing the patient to good oral hygiene (correct, careful brushing, flossing and interdental brushing).
Usually, a procedure called saling, i.e. removal of plaque and tartar, is recommended in the doctor's office. In addition to this, other factors that contribute to periodontal disease and support existing inflammation are removed, as well as adjustments to dentures and removal of abnormal fillings. Various rinses with antibacterial and astringent effects are recommended. If necessary, antibiotics (oral or topical) are used.
In advanced conditions, when a significant part of the periodontal tissues has been lost, surgical procedures are performed to restore the bone support of the teeth (bone grafts, tissue restoration).
VECTOR
It is an innovative, unique non-invasive device for the treatment of gum disease. It is used for both the treatment and prevention of periodontitis. Thanks to its advanced technology, VECTOR makes it possible to clean deep periodontal pockets without performing an invasive surgical procedure.
A fluid containing hydroxyapatite particles is applied to the tips of the appliance, which not only removes harmful bacterial flora from the pockets, but also polishes and prepares the root surfaces so that a new gingival attachment to the tooth roots is formed.
VECTOR uses ultrasonic energy at work. Thanks to its vertical deflection, the instruments move parallel to the root surface. The energy from the instrument is absorbed by particles of polishing fluid (hydroxapatite) or abrasive fluid (silicon carbide), pulsed onto the instrument during operation. The fluid becomes a cleaning medium and removes scale and biofilm from the root surface.
The use of Vector makes the periodontal treatment minimally invasive and minimally traumatic for the patient, while maintaining very high efficacy. The use of hydroxapatite offers another benefit in addition to polishing the surface: it plugs the dentinal tubules, thereby reducing tooth sensitivity.
We use the VECTOR system in the following cases:
- in the prevention of periodontitis,
- in the treatment of early-stage periodontitis as the main treatment,
- in the treatment of advanced periodontitis, as a pre-surgical step that improves the effect of surgical treatment and prepares for it,
- as maintenance treatments after periodontal disease treatment has been completed,
- in the treatment of inflammation around implants,
- in the treatment of inflammation around all-ceramic restorations.
THE VECTOR SYSTEM SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES THE NUMBER OF SURGICAL CASES!
Treatment with the VECTOR device takes approximately 1-1.5 hours and is performed under local anaesthetic. After the procedure, the patient can return to his or her normal activities of the day. There may only be slight soreness and sensitivity of the gums for a few days. After 4-6 A check-up is performed every week. After treatment with VECTOR, the gums are healthier, pale pink, resilient, and their bleeding, swelling and soreness disappear completely or are significantly reduced (read more: PERIODONTOLOGY).
