Stages of implant treatment

Diagnostics

Taking a detailed medical history including chronic diseases and medications taken. Examination of the oral cavity, including assessment of the quality and quantity of bone at the implant site (X-ray, CBCT). Recommendation of any specialist consultations (e.g. cardiologist, endocrinologist).

Planning and preparation

Selection of number and location of implants. Determination of necessary preparatory procedures (e.g. bone augmentation, sinus floor elevation). Discussion of treatment plan, costs and alternatives. Preparing the patient in terms of oral hygiene, protective antibiotic therapy, ordering laboratory tests (e.g. morphology, INR, CRP, glycaemia).

Insertion of the implant(s)

Insertion of the implant into the bone under local anaesthetic, followed by insertion of a locking or healing screw (depending on technique). Placement of sutures and a dressing or protective tampon. In some cases, implant insertion is preceded by additional procedures, such as bone augmentation or Sinus Lift.

Immediate loading of the implant with a crown

Under certain clinical conditions (high implant stability), we can place a temporary prosthetic crown on the day of implantation. The so-called temporary crown excluded from occlusion fills the gap in the smile for the duration of implant integration. After a period of healing and osteointegration, it is replaced with the target prosthetic restoration.

Full arch bridge on implants

In All-on4 / All-on-6 edentulous therapy, we remove residual dentition (either before or on the day of implantation) and place 4-6 implants in the arch. We then place temporary dentures screwed to the implants. Temporary bridges give the effect of new teeth in one day and allow for comfortable function and aesthetics during the period of implant integration.

Healing and integration

The patient receives post-operative instructions and medication: painkillers, antibiotics and probiotics. He reports every 4-6 weeks for follow-up visits to monitor wound healing and implant stability. During this time, he follows proper oral hygiene. The osteointegration stage lasts an average of 3-6 months.

Implant-supported prosthetics

After confirmed integration, the practitioner uncovers the implant if a locking screw has been used and places a healing screw if it has not been previously placed. He takes impressions or scans for the prosthetic restoration (final crown, bridge, implant-supported prosthesis). Fitting of the final prosthetic components takes place at the next appointment.

What is a dental implant and what is it made of?

A dental implant is a titanium screw, 8 to 16 mm long and 2.5 to 6 mm thick, consisting mainly of two parts: 

  • titanium screw surgically inserted into the bone (base), 
  • pillar - also made of titanium, which is the base for the restoration of the tooth crown. 

The implant is constructed from titanium, a very strong and resistant material that does not cause allergic reactions and is accepted by the human body, meaning there is no fear of rejection. 

The implant, which consists of two parts: a titanium screw and a pillar, is inserted in two stages: 

  • The first is the insertion of a titanium screw into the maxilla or mandible, followed by a period of healing and fusion of the implant with the bone tissue, known as osteointegration, during which it becomes an integral part of the bone, 
  • In the second stage, after a period of healing, the upper part of the implant is attached to the base, on which the new tooth or teeth are reconstructed to look like natural teeth. 

When starting implant treatment, Phe patient should have a panoramic radiograph and CT scan to give an accurate picture of the condition of the teeth and bones. During the oral examination, the condition of the gums, teeth and bones is checked in detail. The doctor also takes a thorough medical history. 

Of course, it is possible, but it is conditioned by a number of factors mainly related to the anatomical conditions... and the healthy tissue into which the implant will be placed. However, it is advisable to wait 6-10 weeks so that the bone tissue rebuilds and strengthens and the gums heal. This is very important when the implant is placed and sealed tightly by the gum.
