ICON - a non-invasive method for treating caries in its earliest stages
What is ICON?
ICON is a state-of-the-art, non-invasive method of treating initial caries, i.e. the so-called carious spot. white spot lesion). Treatment is based on resin infiltration technology light-curing and allows the development of caries to be stopped without the use of a drill, needle or any form of mechanical preparation of the enamel.
With ICON, it is possible not only to stop the demineralisation process, but also to restore the aesthetics of the tooth - the stain is no longer visible and the enamel regains its uniform colour.
When does a carious spot form?
A carious spot is the first visible sign of incipient caries - it appears on the surface of the enamel as a white, dull lesion, often in the gingival area or in the spaces of the interdental. It arises as a result of:
- long-term acidic effect pH (below 5.5),
- bacterial action caries-forming (mainly Streptococcus mutans),
- improper hygiene,
- consumption of excess simple sugars,
- reduced saliva mineralisation.
At this stage, the caries has not yet affected the dentin and can be reversed if action is taken early enough.
How does ICON work? Mechanism of action
The treatment is based on the technology of infiltration of porous enamel with a special resin (Icon-Infiltrant) with low viscosity, which penetrates deep into the micropores enamel and alters its optical and mechanical structure.
Stages of treatment:
1. Acid preparation (15% HCl) - a hydrochloric acid preparation is applied to the tooth surface to remove the superficial layer of enamel and expose open demineralisation tubules.
2. ethanol desiccation - degreases and dehydrates the enamel, allowing better penetration of the infiltrant.
3. ICON-applicationInfiltrant - low-viscosity resin penetrates deep into the micropores enamel, replacing water and air inside the porous structure.
4. Light polymerisation - the resin is cured with a polymerisation lamp.
5. Aesthetic and therapeutic effect - micropores are closed, the caries is retained and the stain is invisible.
Why is the stain disappearing?
Szkliwo affected by demineralization has a different structure than a healthy one - it contains more microporesand therefore refracts light differently (matt, white, chalky).
ICON operates on two levels:
- optical masking - infiltrator has a refractive index similar to that of healthy enamel (RI ~1.52), making the surface appear uniform,
- mechanical reinforcement - infiltration seals the enamel and prevents further penetration of bacteria and acids.
Nie it comes to remineralisation sensu stricto (as with the application of fluoride), but the enamel becomes sealed, more resistant and the further carious process is stopped.
What does the treatment look like?
Zabieg takes about 30-40 minutes, is completely painless, does not require anaesthesia and can be performed by an experienced dental hygienist under medical supervision.
Nand more often One visit is sufficient - the effect is immediate and long-lasting. In rare cases (e.g. deeper stains, large aesthetic changes), a second application of ICON after a few weeks is possible.
For whom?
Indications for ICON treatment:
- carious stains on smooth surfaces (e.g. in the cervical region),
- demineralisation changes between teeth (visible on X-rays),
- early stage caries without hard tissue loss,
- stains after hypomineralisation,
- Aesthetic white discolouration on anterior teeth.
Contraindications
- advanced caries with enamel and/or dentin loss,
- Active inflammation of the gums or periodontium in the area of the lesion,
- age below 6-7 years (need for good cooperation),
- allergy to resin components (very rare).
Post-treatment management
ICON does not require any special convalescence. You can eat and drink normally immediately after the procedure. There are no dietary restrictions.
Jedin on the day of the treatment it is recommended:
- avoiding very strong colourings (e.g. red wine, turmeric, black coffee),
- maintaining good oral hygiene.
HOW long does the effect last?
In most cases, the effect of ICON lasts for many years - if proper hygiene is maintained and caries-causing factors are controlled (diet, brushing technique, regular visits).
Some scientific sources suggest that the aesthetic effect lasts for up to six years, but it all depends on individual oral conditions.
